The history of referees' societies on the Island before 1937 is misty to say the least. We do know that there were two societies but the reason for this, whether split geographically or for some other reason, is no longer known.

The first meeting of the current Society was held in October 1937 and the minutes of that meeting simply record "...that it was time for the two factions to unite in order to have one voice in refereeing matters."

The Society currently has approximately 30 members who have a wide range of refereeing experience (and some would say refereeing ability!) between them. Membership of the Society is generally open to anyone who is either a qualified referee, an ex-official, or who simply shares our interest in football and, in particular, football refereeing.

Specsavers Opticians on the Isle of Man became our sponsors in April 2002. As part of the arrangement Specsavers helped 10 Society members to travel to the Island Games in Guernsey at the end of June 2003. They also sponsor the Referee of the Year Award and this website.
